Ho Chi Minh: “Uncle Ho”

Born Nguyen Sinh Cung, Ho Chi Minh (1890–1969) was one of the better educated of the Communist leaders in the twentieth century.24 Ho attended university and lived in exile for some thirty years, which enabled him to become functional, if not fluent, in French, English, Russian, Cantonese, and Mandarin, as well as his native Vietnamese. Ho entered political life in order to work for Vietnam’s independence from France. This effort was delayed thanks to the Japanese invasion of Indo-China during World War II. Following the war, Ho, affectionately known as “Uncle Ho,” petitioned US President Harry Truman (as he had President Woodrow Wilson prior to the war), but received no reply. It is likely that Ho’s Communist leanings and adoption of violent tactics, including murderous purges against those critical of his leadership, explain Truman’s reluctance to support him. In any case, civil war broke out. When the French withdrew, US advisors, and eventually half a million troops, entered Vietnam.

Ho died in 1969 and was succeeded by the Vietnamese Communist Politburo. The war ended in 1974 with a treaty, recognizing two Vietnams, North and South. After the US withdrew all military, the North invaded and overran the South, massacring at least one million, mostly in Saigon, the capital city of South Vietnam. The terms of the peace treaty obviously meant nothing to the Communist regime.
